CUHK Attends the Annual Meeting of the Association of University Presidents of China and Forum on Building World-class Universities
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) participated in the Forum on building world-class universities and the annual meeting of the Association of University Presidents of China (AUPC), held at Fudan University on 18 December. The meeting brought together presidents, vice presidents, and representatives from 13 member institutions of the AUPC to discuss development strategies for higher education in China. Professor Dennis Lo, CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President, together with Professor Jiang Liwen, CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Affairs), represented CUHK to attend the activities and joined the AUPC roundtable meeting. Professor Lo delivered a keynote presentation at the Forum.
The forum was themed “Building world-class universities with Chinese characteristics to serve and support Chinese-style modernisation”. University presidents delivered speeches and engaged in discussions, sharing insights on governance strategies and future development plans. Professor Lo delivered a keynote presentation, entitled “Driving a strong nation through innovation: CUHK’s strategies and practice.” He remarked: “In planning for the 15th Five-year Plan, President Xi Jinping highlighted the leading role of scientific and technological innovation, as well as the importance of advancing the integrated development of education, science and technology, and talent cultivation. As centres for the generation and dissemination of knowledge, world-class universities should consistently uphold the noble mission of generating translational and impactful research and innovation, while nurturing high-calibre talent. The advancement in technologies and the need to maintain cross-disciplinary innovation present challenges, as well as opportunities and stimulation to universities in leveraging their competitive advantages.” Professor Lo outlined CUHK’s recent initiatives and achievements to bolster research excellence, promote interdisciplinary collaborations, and cultivate innovative talent, contributing to the country’s strategy of building a strong nation in education.
Founded in 1997, the AUPC comprises member institutions including CUHK, Fudan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, The University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Macau, Nanjing University, Peking University, the University of Science and Technology of China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsinghua University, Xi’an Jiaotong University and Zhejiang University (in alphabetical order). It aims to dedicate its expertise and coordinate resources to develop higher education in China. Since its establishment, it has organised annual meetings, presidents’ forums, student interflow activities, and developed a Visiting Scholar/Executive Scheme to foster research and academic collaboration among members.
CUHK Vice-Chancellor Visits Shanghai Innovation Institute
Professor Dennis Lo, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), visited Shanghai Innovation Institute on 17 December. Meetings were held to discuss innovative educational projects, exploring joint efforts to advance talent development and research excellence.
Both sides examined possible areas of collaboration, covering reciprocal exchange programmes for faculty and students, joint PhD training pathways, talent recruitment collaboration, and artificial intelligence courses. The visit fostered academic linkage and devised plans for partnership development.
CUHK Joins the 2025 Greater Bay Area Science Forum
The 2025 Greater Bay Area Science Forum, themed “Industry-Research Integration Drives Smart Innovation in the Greater Bay Area,” was held from 6 to 8 December 2025, jointly hosted by the governments of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. Professor Isabella Poon, Provost of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), attended the activities on behalf of the University.
At the opening ceremony on 7 December, CUHK joined hands with twelve universities from Hong Kong and Macao—including The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Macau, Hong Kong Baptist University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, Macau University of Science and Technology, The University of Hong Kong, alongside their education ventures in Guangdong province, jointly signed an initiative pledge to actively integrate into the development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) International Science and Technology Innovation Centre, in taking the lead towards a globally competitive innovation ecosystem.
The Greater Bay Area Science Forum, launched by the Alliance of International Science Organizations in the Belt and Road Region (ANSO) in 2021, is regarded as the highest-level academic event in the GBA. ANSO, initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, comprises 78 scientific and research organizations from countries and regions worldwide. CUHK is the only founding institution of Hong Kong.

Professor Jiang Liwen, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Affairs) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), visited Shanghai from 18 to 19 December to participate in a series of important exchange activities. Professor Jiang joined Professor Dennis Lo, CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President, to attend the 2025 Annual Meeting of the Association of University Presidents of China and Forum on Building World-class Universities held at Fudan University, where he exchanged ideas with presidents of AUPC member universities.
On 19 December, Professor Jiang met with Deputy District Mayor Mr Liu Jin-Yuan of the Yangpu District People’s Government and representatives from innovation and technology organizations. They exchanged ideas on recent developments and further collaboration projects at the CUHK Shanghai Centre. A meeting was held to discuss development plans between Professor Jiang and Professor Wu Jian, Vice-President of East China Normal University. This visit further strengthened ties and fostered collaboration with the District Government and partner institutions in Shanghai.
