CUHK Joins Hands with CAS and MUST on Joint Laboratory
Professor Dennis Lo, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), led a delegation to visit the Hefei Institute of Physical Science (HIPS) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 14 December. The CUHK delegation comprised Professor Sham Mai-Har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research); Professor Hon-Ki Tsang, Dean of Engineering; and Professor Ren Wei, Assistant Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Engineering.
During the visit, CUHK joined hands with HIFS and the University of Science and Technology of Macau (MUST) to sign an agreement to establish the Joint Laboratory for Spectroscopic Detection of Matter Composition in Deep Space. The international collaborative payload project for China’s Tianwen-3 Mars mission was officially launched at the same time.
Professor Lo witnessed the signing of the agreement alongside Vice Mayor Yuan Fei of the Hefei Municipal People’s Government and Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Hefei Municipal Committee; Vice Director Tan Haibin of the Anhui Provincial Department of Science and Technology; Academician Liu Wenqing and President Liu Jianguo of HIPS; and Vice President Professor Paul Kwong Hang Tam of MUST. They jointly presided over the inauguration ceremony for the joint laboratory and the launch ceremony for the Tianwen-3 payload project. The joint laboratory aims to create a high-end scientific research platform to integrate the strengths of the Chinese Mainland in instrument engineering development, Hong Kong’s expertise in precision spectroscopy and artificial intelligence, and Macao’s research platform capabilities in aerospace technology and planetary science. These collective efforts will continue to serve the strategic needs of China’s space exploration endeavours.
Professor Lo stated at the ceremony: “CUHK is honoured to join this tripartite alliance. By pooling resources and scientific strengths, we will jointly participate in the payload project collaboration, which holds significant and far-reaching impacts for the integration into the national development.” The newly launched project for the Tianwen-3 payload ‘Laser Heterodyne Spectrometer’, led by CUHK, will manifest the joint laboratory’s efforts to advance substantive collaboration.
CUHK and Sun Yat-sen University Hold the Partnership Steering Committee Meeting
The 17th meeting of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) -Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) Steering Committee on Partnership Development was held on 16 December 2025. Co-chaired by PVC Professor Jiang Liwen of CUHK and Professor Zhang Qi, Vice Party Secretary of SYSU, the meeting brought together more than 40 participants from both universities. Representatives from collaborative teams reported the progress of joint projects in historical anthropology, gastroenterology, life science, Chinese, mathematics, public health, rehabilitation engineering, earth sciences and engineering, and management. The meeting reviewed the progress and further discussed expanding the scope of existing cooperation to serve the needs for further development of the Greater Bay Area.
Since establishing a partnership in the 1980s, CUHK has been in close collaboration with SYSU in a wide range of collaborative projects, including research collaboration and student exchange. Both universities joined hands with the University of Macau to initiate the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance in November 2016, which aims to promote regional development in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Greater Bay Area by consolidating the resources of elite universities and nurturing talents.
