On 11 September, Dr Feng Fei, Secretary of the CPC Hainan Provincial Committee, led a delegation comprising representatives from the Hainan Provincial Government, Wenchang International Aerospace City Administration, and Hainan Satellite Data and Application Research Centre to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The delegates met with Professor Dennis Lo, CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President; Professor Sham Mai-Har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research); Professor Kwan Mei-Po, Head of Chung Chi College and Director of the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science (ISEIS); Professor Anthony Fung Ying-Him, Dean of Social Science; Professor Jiang Liwen, Acting Dean of Science, and representatives from CUHK for exchange.
During the meeting, CUHK and Hainan Satellite Data and Application Research Centre signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly establish an international cooperation model of “R&D in Hainan + Promotion in Hong Kong”, aiming to build a global satellite data hub, a cross-border collaboration bridge, and an integrated platform for industry, academia, and research. The MOU was signed by Professor Sham, Professor Kwan, and Mr Gao Yong, Director of the Strategic Development Division of Wenchang International Aerospace City Administration. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Professor Dennis Lo and Dr Feng.
Under the MOU, both parties will leverage the research strength of CUHK’s ISEIS to develop the Hong Kong Satellite Data Centre in support of the country’s international space cooperation strategy. The initiative will promote resource sharing, technological synergy, and industry linkage between the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong, while utilizing Hong Kong’s global network to bring China’s remote sensing data, technical standards, and application achievements to the world, enhancing the international competitiveness of China’s satellite data.
CUHK and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Hold Steering Committee Meeting
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) convened their 8th meeting of the Partnership Steering Committee on 26 September. The meeting was co-chaired by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sham Mai-Har and Prof. He Hong-Ping, Vice-President of CAS. Over 50 CUHK participants and CAS representatives from Kunming, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, including members of CUHK-CAS joint laboratories, participated in the meeting.
The Committee received progress reports from the joint laboratories in areas such as stem cell and regenerative medicine, molecular mechanisms of diseases, chemical synthesis, high-density electronic packaging, robotics and intelligent systems, biomaterials, and multimedia technology. Participating members exchanged views and offered suggestions for further strengthening collaboration among the laboratories, and on advancing innovation, strengthening industry-academia-research integration, and nurturing top-tier talents.
The meeting further strengthened the long-standing partnership between CUHK and CAS since 1986, furthering development for new initiatives in joint research, talent exchange, and international collaboration.
