On 4 November, editors-in-chief from eleven Chinese academic journals in Hong Kong and Macao, including those from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), gathered at the Symposium on Chinese Academic Journals and Think Tank Development in Hong Kong and Macao to receive their Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) Database Inclusion Certificates. These 11 journals span the humanities and social sciences, demonstrating the significant contributions of the academic communities in Hong Kong and Macao to the development of academic Chinese. Two journals from CUHK, namely Journal of Chinese Studies and Studies in Chinese Linguistics, are included, which signifies a major step forward in integrating Chinese-language academic research from Hong Kong into the national social sciences research system, with an irreplaceable role in bridging China and the world, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, and advancing the internationalisation of Chinese academia.
Professor Jun Yu, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics, and Assistant Dean (Mainland Affairs) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s (CUHK) Faculty of Medicine (CU Medicine), has recently been awarded the “Women in Science Award”, the “2024 Cell Press China Best Paper Award” and “2024 Cell Press China Most Picked Award” by Cell Press, a leading international journal publisher. The awards recognise her exceptional contributions to and extensive influence on research into the pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer. This marks the first time in the awards’ history that a scientist has received three in the same year, taking home top honours in biomedical sciences in China. Professor Yu is also the only recipient from an institution in Hong Kong, China, this year.
Professor Yu has been involved in the study of digestive diseases for 30 years and is currently the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Digestive Disease and Director of the Institute of Digestive Disease at CUHK. She has made significant contributions to unravelling the molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal tumours, elucidating the relationship between gut microbiomes and tumours as well as between fatty liver and liver cancers, and developing early diagnostic markers and target therapies. She holds more than 30 patents, and her patented early diagnostic markers for colorectal and gastric cancers have been approved by the National Medical Products Administration of the People’s Republic of China for clinical trials. In addition to being a member of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, an Academician of the Academy of Europe, and an Academician of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, she has received more than 50 major academic awards in the Chinese Mainland and overseas. In 2024, she was awarded the Wu Jiepeng – Paul Janssen Medical and Pharmaceutical Award, and in 2025, she became the first and only academic in Hong Kong, China, to be selected as a “National Distinguished Doctor” by the National Health Commission.
