The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) celebrated its 60th anniversary by holding the inauguration ceremony for its Beijing Centre in Dongcheng District, Beijing on June 28. The event marked CUHK’s achievements over the past 60 years and represented an important milestone in its network of collaborations in the mainland. The ceremony was attended by representatives from government, industry, academia, and alumni from Beijing and Hong Kong.

Mr. Liu Yuhui, Vice Mayor of Beijing Municipality, congratulated CUHK on its anniversary and welcomed the establishment of the Beijing Centre. He said he was delighted to see the unveiling of the CUHK Beijing Centre, which will open a new chapter for exchange and cooperation between Beijing and Hong Kong. He anticipated that it will present great opportunities to further coordinate technical resources and high-caliber talents from the two regions, foster closer ties and mutual prosperity, and seize shared opportunities to serve the best development of the nation.

Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, expressed gratitude to the Beijing Municipal Government, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Talents, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government’s Beijing Office, and CUHK alumni for their support in establishing the Beijing Centre. He highlighted the center’s role in cultivating innovative professionals, facilitating interdisciplinary science and innovation cooperation, and strengthening collaboration between CUHK and its strategic partners. He also emphasized the mutual benefits of expanding Beijing-Hong Kong cooperation and expressed CUHK’s commitment to the development of the Beijing Centre.

Mr. Chang Wai-Yuen, Director of the Beijing Office of the HKSAR government, noted that talent is the key factor in developing Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub. He stated that the establishment of CUHK Beijing Centre will deepen cooperation in education, technology, and talent exchange. He also highlighted Hong Kong’s unique advantages of being backed by the mainland and connected to the world and reiterated the government’s determination to be at the forefront of scientific and technological innovation.

During the ceremony, two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) were signed. The first MoU, signed with the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Talent, aims to promote cooperation projects between CUHK and Beijing’s universities, research institutes, enterprises, and other institutions. The second MoU, signed with The National (Zhongguancun) Torch Institute of Science and Technology, focuses on promoting the transfer and transformation of scientific and technological achievements between the two regions.

The Beijing Centre, in collaboration with HICOOL Business School, serves as CUHK’s liaison hub in Beijing. It provides support for education and research development, academic exchange, and cooperation with mainland universities. The Centre also hosts forums, seminars, and academic activities to foster scientific research cooperation and deepen partnerships between industry, universities, and research institutions. Beijing is establishing a high-standard talent hub, and CUHK will have active participation in it. Additionally, it serves as a venue for CUHK alumni from the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region to connect and strengthen alumni networks.

CUHK established its first Beijing Liaison Office after China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong in 1997. With the Beijing Centre and the upcoming CUHK Shanghai Centre, along with other facilities in the Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macau Greater Bay Area, CUHK aims to build a comprehensive mainland network to promote interaction and cooperation among government, industries, universities, and research institutions, connecting the nation and the world.
