CUHK Attends Shanghai–Hong Kong University Alliance Annual Meeting
The Shanghai–Hong Kong University Alliance (SHUA) Annual Meeting, accompanied by a themed forum, was held on November 19 in Shanghai. The activities brought together over 60 guests and representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and 16 member universities from Shanghai and Hong Kong. A delegation from The Chinese University of Hong Kong joined the annual meeting and participated in the activities.
Alliance members reviewed progress over the past year in research collaboration, talent cultivation, and student and academic exchanges. The next chair and vice chair of the alliance board were elected at the annual meeting. Participating guests and representatives highlighted at the event that the Alliance has become an important platform after 7 years for complementary strengths and partnership development in higher education, and they looked ahead to deepen cooperation in education, science, and talent development to support the regions and the nation’s initiatives to become a leading country in education.
Since its establishment in 2018, SHUA has served as a vital channel for expanding collaboration between Hong Kong and Mainland universities, nurturing outstanding talent. Member universities include: Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University, East China Normal University, Shanghai University, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai Normal University, East China University of Political Science and Law, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, and The Education University of Hong Kong.
CUHK Takes Part in the General Assembly of the Greater Bay Area Science and Technology Collaborative Innovation Alliance
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Science and Technology Collaborative Innovation Alliance convened its second General Assembly on 29 November 2025. The meeting reviewed the reports for the alliance general assembly and achievements in the past year, deliberated upon and approved the amendments to the charter, as well as the membership list. On the same day, the Alliance organized an Exchange Forum on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Industry Applications. Through keynote speeches, roundtable discussions, and exhibitions of achievements, the Forum provided a collaborative platform for the artificial intelligence and robotics industries within the Greater Bay Area. The event also featured dedicated sessions for technology transfer and partnership pitching to facilitate industrial exchange and the practical application of research outcomes. The Chinese University of Hong Kong attended the meeting and participated in the activities as an alliance member institution.
Since its establishment in 2019, the Alliance has united members comprising associations for science and technology from the nine Greater Bay Area cities, technology groups in Hong Kong and Macao, universities, research institutes, and major enterprises. It aims to build an open regional innovation community, strengthen technology transfer, and advance talent cooperation through academic exchanges, professional alliances, and innovation bases, contributing to the development of the Greater Bay Area.
CUHK Attends 2025 Beijing-Hong Kong Universities Alliance Working Group Meeting
The Beijing-Hong Kong Universities Alliance (BHUA) Working Meeting was held on 4 December 2025. It reviewed the achievements of the past year and set priorities for 2025–2026. Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (Mainland and Regional) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), attended the meeting on behalf of CUHK and engaged in in-depth exchanges with alliance members.
The meeting brought together leaders and representatives from member universities in Beijing and Hong Kong under the theme of “Innovative Pathways and Mechanisms for Deepening Cross-Regional Collaboration between Beijing and Hong Kong Universities.” Topics included talent development, research innovation, social services, and collaborative mechanisms. Group discussions were arranged to foster linkages in building institutionalized and platform-based cooperation. This annual activity marked a new stage in the partnership between Beijing and Hong Kong universities to continue the joint efforts to achieve mutual benefits in education and research among alliance members.
CUHK Joins AI Open Alliance
On 16 December 2025, the Artificial Intelligence Open Alliance announced its official inauguration to pool resources for AI innovation and application. It was initiated by 17 leading universities and eight top-tier technology enterprises and research institutions, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Professor Irwin King, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) of CUHK, attended the inauguration ceremony on behalf of the University.
Designed as an international, open, and nonprofit strategic collaboration platform, the Alliance aims to undertake major national AI research tasks, build an independent and controllable AI infrastructure system, cultivate high-level AI talents, and promote AI application in education and other fields in developing an open-source AI technology community.
Professor Li Luming, President of Tsinghua University, will serve as the first Chair of the Alliance Board. Five specialized committees have been established, each led respectively by Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, CUHK, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, covering AI in education, AI in research, fundamental AI engineering, AI ethics and governance, and international AI cooperation.
