CUHK Attends ANSO General Assembly
Professor Sham Mai-har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), attended the 4th General Assembly of the Alliance of International Science Organizations in the Belt and Road Region (ANSO) on 30 October in Beijing. The General Assembly reviewed ANSO’s progress since the previous meeting, approved new member applications, amendments to the statute, as well as major plans. It also elected the President, Vice Presidents, and Governing Board members for the next term. The meeting featured an open discussion on future development for ANSO, where member organizations shared insights on strengthening international cooperation in science, technology, and innovation. Professor Sham gave a presentation on priorities for international collaboration and shared CUHK’s commitment to fostering global partnerships and contributing to collaborative research initiatives in the Belt and Road Region.
Initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), ANSO is an international, non-profit, and non-governmental scientific organization dedicated to addressing common challenges in the Belt and Road Region and advancing global scientific development. Founding members include leading scientific and research institutions from countries such as Russia, Pakistan, Poland, Hungary, Nepal, Kenya, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Brazil. CUHK is the only founding institution from Hong Kong in the Alliance.
CUHK Participates in Jiangsu-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance Annual Meeting
The 2025 Jiangsu-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance (JHMUA) Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum was held on 31 October, under the theme “Pooling Strengths of Universities, Promoting Openness and Shared Benefits.” The event brought together representatives from 45 member institutions across Jiangsu, Hong Kong, and Macao to discuss inter-university cooperation, resource sharing, and open exchange.
Ms Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (Mainland and Regional) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), attended the meeting and joined discussions with alliance members on topics for collaboration concerning talent development, research innovation, cultural exchange, and community service. The Presidents’ Forum held sessions focusing on openness and inclusivity, win-win cooperation, and resource sharing. Representatives from member institutions proposed new plans on how universities in the three regions can leverage their strengths to drive innovative development.
Established in 2021, JHMUA has become a major platform for academic collaboration among the three regions. CUHK has been participating in alliance initiatives such as joint research projects, student interflow, and cultural programmes, contributing to the regional higher education development.
Announcement on the Establishment of Sub-alliances under the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao University Alliance
Initiated by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Sun Yat-sen University, and the University of Macau, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance (GHMUA) was established in 2016 as a higher education platform to extend the joint efforts of elite universities in promoting academic cooperation in the Greater Bay Area. The Alliance Board is now calling for applications for the establishment of sub-alliances under GHMUA.

CUHK Takes Part in Joint Design Activities in the Greater Bay Area
From 27 to 29 September, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) School of Architecture, joined academic and design exchange activities in Foshan and Guangzhou to advance collaboration within the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao University Alliance.
More than 90 students and faculty members from CUHK, South China University of Technology (SCUT), and Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen) conducted field research in Zuotan Village, focusing on renewal planning for the Sangyuanwei Ganzhutian hydraulic heritage area. Discussions with local authorities and community representatives explored cultural heritage integration, land use, and urban development strategies.
The CUHK delegation also visited the Guangzhou Planning Institute and SCUT, enhancing ties and promoting joint research plans. This multi-day programme marked a significant step in strengthening academic networks and regional collaboration, aligning with CUHK’s commitment to cross-disciplinary innovation and contributing to collaboration on a sustainable urban future.
